John Wall notches his 24th double-double of the season with 25 points and 13 assists as the Wizards blow a 19-point lead but hang on to win, 104-101. Otto Porter also had 25 points for the Wizards tonight on 9-12 shooting including a career-high six three-pointers. This was a crucial victory for the Wizards who have now won 13 straight at home.
Otto Porter was blazing hot to start this game as he connected on his first four three-point attempts as the Wizards raced out to a 30-24 lead.
The hot shooting continued, this time from the bench who combined for 18 points tonight led Smith with eight. With the bench on the floor, the Wizards started the second period 9/11 from the field highlighted by this Jason Smith steal and dunk on the other end.
The Wizards shot 53 percent in the first half and led by as many as 19 at one point but were just up 15, 66-51 at halftime.
The second half was a different story. Washington was VERY flat to start the third quarter and didn’t hit their first field goal of the quarter until Wall scored on an easy layup at the 6:50 mark. The Wizards were able to keep the lead at double digits for the majority of the period but the Grizzles clawed back in as a result of their offensive rebounding. Memphis had eight offensive rebounds in the third quarter which resulted in easy putbacks at the rim as they were able to cut the lead to 6, 83-77 entering the fourth.
It was the Grizzles turn to go ice cold. Memphis missed their first 10 shots of the fourth quarter but the Wizards weren’t able to pull away. Porter came up big again knocking down back-to-back three’s in as many possessions as it looked like that might be enough for the Wizards to cruise the rest of the way.
Not so. Memphis prolonged the game by fouling Washignton and came up with a few turnovers. JaMychal Green had a chance to tie the game as time expired but his shot came up short. Wizards win, 104-101.
Otto Porter comes up huge
As mentioned, Otto knocked down his first four three-pointers tonight en route to six for the game and 25 points overall. Otto came up big when it mattered the most; to start the game and in the fourth quarter. He struggled a bit at times defensively but we’ll give him a pass tonight.
Just another ho-hum double-double for Wall
Wall scored 25 points to go along with 13 assists (8 in the first half). He had far from his best shooting night but was able to get to the line and knock them down when he got there, as he was a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe. In addition, Wall also continued his streak of 29 straight games with a steal. You’ll never see a more nonchalant 25 and 13 game in your life.
Markieff Morris shows up big-time
There are often times when Morris is disengaged. Tonight was not one of those nights. Morris put his fingerprint on the game in the second quarter as he went 5-7 from the field for 10 points. He ended the night with 17 points and 12 rebounds. In addition, he did a great job guarding Zach Randolph and was also switched onto Marc Gasol at times. When Morris is engaged in the game, it makes the Wizards that much tougher to beat.
