Defense was optional as both teams came out of the gates shooting hot to begin the night. The Knicks started 6-10 from the field with most of their early scoring coming from Carmelo Anthony and heralded rookie Kristaps Porzingis.
The Wizards had an answer as they continued to run-and-gun. Wall found Gortat on a very nice pick-and-roll where he hung in the air until the last second to dish the ball off to the big man for the easy layup. Wall then showed off his newly improved jump shot knocking down a three pointer and a floater in the lane for the Wizards as they regained the lead, 18-15 midway through the first.
Kelly Oubre Jr. got his first taste of NBA basketball and well, he looked like a rookie. Oubre became a bit of a ball stopper in the second quarter and was quick to force up poor shots. The rookie had a tough night shooting 0-7 from the field. Hey, it’s a preseason game, no harm done.
The Wizards looked like they were in control but a late second quarter push by the Knicks, mainly Carmelo Anthony and Jose Calderon allowed the Knicks to regain the lead 60-55 going into halftime.
The third quarter was a wild one. Carmelo Anthony picked up right where he left off, smoking hot. Carmelo hit his first four shots of the quarter to stretch the Knicks lead to 15, 72-57 just minutes into the third quarter.
On the other hand, the Wizards looked disinterested to start the second half. Poor defense, turnovers, and on top of that; it’s pretty hard to run on a team when you’re constantly taking the ball out of the basket. The Wizards got a spark fromBradley Beal when he collected a loose ball on the defensive end and took it end-to-end to throw down this thunderous dunk:
The Wizards were able to claw back into this one and tied the game at 83 late in the third quarter on two Ramon Sessions free throws. But the Knicks held the lead 85-83 after three.
The comeback would not be completed as the Knicks pulled away in the fourth quarter behind some very impressive play from Derrick Williams. The newly acquired Knick ended the night with 23 points; most coming in the fourth quarter.
The loss drops the Wizards to 1-1 in the preseason. Up next, the Brazilian squad Bauru on Sunday night.
